Bowl Season is fast approaching and to all of the huge college football fans like myself, it is one of the best times of the year. However it is also a time ripe with controversy over who gets into the College Football Playoff. In its second year, the playoff was created to replace the old BCS system and add a human element. The Selection Committee consists of 12 individuals including Athletic Directors, former coaches, former NCAA employees, a sports reporter and even Condoleezza Rice - 66th U.S. Secretary of State. They meet once a week to discuss each team’s performance and cast a secret ballot to rank the top 25 and most importantly the top four teams who make the playoff. With these rankings come dissenting opinions and controversy which has led to a cry for the playoff to be expanded to eight teams to give those right on the cusp an opportunity to compete for the ultimate prize. The current contract is for this format to run for 12 seasons. In my opinion, the playoff should remain at four teams. Expanding it opens up a regress argument that it should continue to be expanded exponentially to which the Committee would be rendered virtually useless. Fans, coaches, and pundits didn’t like the old system; now they don’t like the new one. Pick your poison. No system is going to completely satisfy all interested parties so I think we should turn our attention to the action on the field. Regardless of who ends up in the playoff, this season has given us some unbelievable moments, competitive games and drama. Going into the final week of the season, three of the top four teams still have a game to play against top competition in their respective conference championship games and a shakeup in the rankings may be right around the corner. I can’t wait to see how the dust settles next week once bowl bids are handed out, but until then we can all just wait and try to enjoy the best the NCAA has to offer.
