If you would have told me that instead of a typical Monday in Blacksburg I'd be in N.Y.C. helping the MLBPAA get ready for their largest fundraiser dinner, I would have said you're crazy. But alas, here I am in the Big Apple helping a company I truly care about, who I interned for this previous summer.
The Legends for Youth Clinic, organized by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA), helps raise funds for the youth clinics the nonprofit organization puts on throughout the year and throughout the county. The MLB alumni organizes hundreds of these free clinics in and even outside the U.S. to give children the opportunity to learn from former MLB players. I'm honored to be the only intern from this previous summer to be asked to work at this event. This is not only an opportunity to see how an event is planned and executed, but it also gives me an opportunity to rekindle with the colleagues I worked with this previous summer in Colorado Springs. In addition to meet new people, and of course, network with important individuals. So I thought it might be beneficial to hear first hand what I'm learning during this experience, as I'm experiencing it. So far, this is how my trip has gone: Sunday Nov. 11th: 9 hour train ride from Clifton Forge, VA. to New York Penn Station ended up taking 12 hours. See the hash tag #HellTrain or #TrainRideFromHell to learn more about this AWESOME day of travel. 11:30 p.m. Arrived at the Marriott Marquis and realized this colossal hotel would be my home for the next few days. 12 a.m. Wine with colleagues, whose room I crashed in for the night 1a.m. Seating chart finalized by membership coordinator Monday Nov. 12th: one day before event 6:00 a.m. Wake up 7:00 a.m. Press release sent to major NY media outlets by public relations coordinator 7:30 a.m. Membership coordinator meets with development coordinator to finalize guests information to prepare for guests checking in later. 9:00 a.m. Coffee run (how did we survive this long without coffee) 10:00 a.m. Edit script for the MC of the dinner. 10:30 a.m. Meeting with COO of company to update on progress of event 11:00 a.m. Run through of event 12:00 p.m. Meeting 5:30 p.m. Cocktails with full staff Yes, there is a large gap between 12 p.m. and cocktail hour, however, that does not mean that it will be spent touring the Big Apple. Rather, the day before an event and after a dry run will highlight what still needs to be done, and more importantly what still needs to be fixed. There is so much that I have learned already and it's not even 10 a.m.
