PRSSA National Conference was amazing! I would highly recommend everyone who can possibly attend next year's conference to look into it. Not only did I have a great time networking and meeting new people, but I also learned tons of information during the many seminars available. A few of the seminars I attended include:
- Building Trust and Inspiring Passion: Keys to Success in Both the For-Profit and Non-Profit World - Public Interest Communications: Be The Change You Want To See in the World - Social Media: Think Before You Tweet - Media Training One of my personal favorites was Building Trust and Inspiring Passion. One of the most helpful phrases the speaker, Joe Hice, said was, "Understand your brand, then let passion rule." Since I would like to do non-profit work when I graduate, this seminar was full of useful information geared toward my future intentions. He also noted that as public relations practitioners, we should be "champions of trust." Another one of my favorite seminars was Media Training. There were two parts to this session. In the first part, the presenter, Joseph Trahan, spoke about the basics when dealing with media in an interview situation. He discussed the three parts (preparation, during the interview, and after the interview) and how to conduct yourself during each of them. He suggested that for each minute of on-air time, you should spend one hour of preparation time;therefore, for a ten minute interview, one should spend ten hours preparing. That was quite surprising to me since I had no idea that much time was necessary for one interview. The second part of the seminar consisted of PRSSA members volunteering to do a "mock interview." During the "mock interview," the chosen individuals would be interviewed by Trahan and his or her responses would be recorded. After about five interviews, he played them back for everyone to see and offered suggestions for each individual. This was extremely helpful since as a public relations professionals, it is crucial to have a good relationship and know how to deal with media outlets, especially television. Overall, PRSSA National Conference was one of the best, most helpful experiences I have had so far. I learned a great deal about public relations from a variety of professionals who really knew what they were talking about. It was great to get some out of the classroom interaction with people who are actually involved with what I want to do with my life. Hearing their input on and suggestions for various types of public relations really helped solidify my desire to go into non-profit PR. I am already looking forward to attending PRSSA National Conference next year in California! I strongly recommend that anyone who has the desire to learn more and have a great time talk to one of the VT PRSSA members who went this year. Even though it was only a few days long, my experience at PRSSA NC was something I will always remember, and I met people that I will never forget. Andrea Long
