With Halloween being the second most grossing holiday in the United States, how can we as poor college students afford to take part in the fun every year? Not only once a year, every year, do we need to be prepared for, but we must be prepared for two nights in the week rather than just Halloween night itself! Being in college makes for a tight budget for most, but hopefully everyone can enjoy this holiday, even on a budget. Luckily, there are plenty of options to make Halloween inexpensive and just as exciting. The easiest way to start a costume is to scan what is already in the closet. Depending on what is there can make the decision easier. Take key pieces that are solids to use to build on top of, or use Pinterest to see what could possibly be used in ways unimaginable. If you are using things that are in your closet, it may be easiest to go to the store and purchase small accessories to build a cheap costume. For example, places like Claire’s, Charlotte Russe, and Target sell small accessories that are perfect for adding to a plain outfit. Another great way to save money on costumes is by going to the local Goodwill or consignment shop to see what they have there. It may sound gross to use something that has been worn by someone else, but like most Halloween costumes, they probably have only been worn one time, and a good washing won’t hurt anything! Most things there aren’t over five bucks which makes it feasible for college students. The final option that is suggested is to wait for the end-of-season sales when all the Halloween stores are just trying to clear inventory and everything is dirt cheap. Although this means waiting for the next year to wear it, you still could get an awesome Halloween costume for a great deal. One thing to keep in mind when buying a costume is to keep an idea of how many times you could possibly wear it to get your money’s worth. If you get something super expensive, make sure you can use it for multiple functions rather than just one night. If spending money is not an option, there are a few ways around that as well. Making your own is always an exciting way to show off your creativity. People who can pull this off make Halloween costumes seem so original rather than the typical cookie-cutter costumes. Without a doubt you could turn heads with a funny, creative costume. The sky is the limit when creating your own. Just be careful when spending time and money on supplies to make them; otherwise, buying one could have possibly been a better option. Reusing or borrowing other friends’ costumes is never a bad idea either. Since everyone has that one costume just hiding away in the closet, it wouldn’t hurt to ask to borrow it! No one would ever know that it was your friends who goes to a different school! It’s a great way to be something different without spending a dime. Although budgets can get in the way, hopefully this has helped trigger a new idea to help save money. Have a spectacular Halloween! I hate to drive alone. So when I found myself on a sole long distance trip last week, as usual I was fighting boredom and the need for a nap. My mind then wandered to food or maybe coffee. Then I noticed a billboard advertising a newly open eatery, offering of course food and a variety of hot beverages. Huh, that’s timely. But how did they know I would need a snack? That got me thinking about billboards. Classes often focus our attention on a variety of mediums for public relations and marketing messages, never do I remember that including billboards. Are billboards still widely used as an effective tool? After a little research, I discovered billboards have been around since the early 1830’s and they continue to capture the public’s attention even in today’s highly digital age. Billboards often advertise a product or service that can be easily and quickly understood to drivers and pedestrians. They are used globally in both small and large markets from Times Square to Singapore. They can be very simple such as a highway sign or atop a digital high-resolution screen. The first step for a successful billboard starts with knowing the product and target audience. It must grab attention and leave an impression on the audience about the brand. Billboards tell a story, it provides depth and meaning in what is being advertised. Everything about the design affects the success of the billboard. Color, image and text are the most important aspects of a billboard. These aspects will vary depending on your brand, but its crucial to use these design steps to help assist your message and help others see the bigger picture. So when developing a comprehensive PR or marketing campaign, billboards cannot be overlooked as they have the power to be a potential effective tool. Despite it’s simple nature, it can get the message across. I’ll never look at billboards the same again. Here are 15 of the most creative billboards in the world: http://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/creative-billboards-around-world Edited by Katharina Elberti, Vice President of Publications 2015-2016 Image courtesy of http://www.inboxity.com/view.asp?id=890 |
