PRSSA is an opportunity for students to gain more hands-on experience and enhance their communication and public relations skills. Students work in various committees, have access to network opportunities and get a first hand look into the world of public relations. PRSSA allows students to get their foot in the door to various careers in PR and other communication-related fields. Since we’re in the age of technology where people share content in a matter of seconds, businesses want to display their image in a positive light where audiences embrace their work and share it with others. Companies are interested in public relations because it centers around relevancy. In contrast to advertising, public relations is what people call “earned media” rather than advertising’s “paid media”. Free, positive publicity is something any company will take, and advertising can be expensive, especially for small and upcoming businesses. However, public relations practitioners communicate with sources like journalists and editors, and hope their information is deemed as “newsworthy” content. Sources evaluate this information and publicize it to different media outlets depending on if it’s significant or not. This is what sets companies apart from each other! When companies have strong PR teams and skills, they will gain more free, positive publicity from other trusted, third party sources, which establishes more credibility, which then attracts more consumers!
